Many modem Pagans speak of 'The Goddess', meaning the essence behind all the different Goddesses who have been worshipped all over the world. A chant which is often heard at Pagan gatherings sings to the Goddess as:

Isis,Astarte,Diana,Hecate,Demeter,Kali,Inanna.

These many names from the past are seen as representing different aspects of the Great Goddess who is universal and present in all cultures and at all times, the eternal feminine, the Divine She.

Some branches of Paganism see Goddess and God as two aspects of the polarity found in energy - receptive and active, creative and destructive. This does not mean that the feminine aspect of the Divine is passive. Many Pagans have a similar view to Hindus, whereby all manifestation, whether of consciousness or matter, is symbolized by Shakti the Great Mother of All. Shakti is energy and power, but energy and power must take shape or form. This is Shiva the Great Father of All. This view is the opposite of that found in Judaic thought, which has in turn influenced Christian thinking. In Jewish mysticism, the Great Mother, Binah, is seen as the receptive womb which gives form to the force and energy emitted by the Father, Chokmah. Women's Paganism and Wicca see the Goddess as the Creatrix. Rather than a notion of a creator God as architect of the universe, with the masculine being the primary force and the feminine arising from it, the Goddess is seen as the dynamic force which gives birth to the universe either by a process by which she calls the God to her or by parthogenesis (giving birth from herself alone - a virgin birth).
